“Battle of the Neretva” is a partisan film from 1969, which, by a court decision since 2013, is treated as a work of Croatian cinematography. It became the most-watched war film in Yugoslav cinema history, shot in international co-production with numerous foreign actors. The film focuses on the Battle of the Neretva, one of the most famous offensives of the Axis powers during World War II.
In 1970, it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. In the following years, several films with similar themes, such as “The Sutjeska,” were produced. “Battle of the Neretva” was produced in cooperation with Croatian, Slovenian, Bosnian-Herzegovinian, German, Italian, Serbian, Montenegrin, Macedonian, and Kosovar producers. In 2014, the Croatian company Jadran Film, based on a court decision, took over the distribution and protection of the film’s copyrights.
